The Rotary Club of Harare, Zimbabwe which was chartered on 27 June 1930 with 18 members, was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Johannesburg, South Africa as one of the first Rotary Clubs in Africa outside the Union of South Africa. At that time the country was called Rhodesia after Cecil Rhodes. With the coming of Independence from Britain in 1980, the country’s name changed to Zimbabwe and a few years later, the capital city’s name was changed from Salisbury to Harare.
The city remains the capital and economic hub of Zimbabwe.
The club has spearheaded some projects in Zimbabwe which include the establishment of
- Fairways Home for the Aged
- Senior Citizens Club
- Athol Evans Home
Some past projects for the club include the Muvuramanzi project for clean water and hygiene and assisting Sister Catherine’s Dorothy Duncan Center Braille Library. The club is also well known for its successful Carols by Candlelight event which is conducted every year in November. The club sponsors a number of Interact Club in its promotion of youth with an Adventure in Citizenship programme.

The Public Image committee was created with the goal to improve Rotary’s image in Zimbabwe. The committee aims to consistently communicate who we are and what we do and we ensure that Rotary remains a symbol of hope, action, and transformation in Harare and Zimbabwe at large. The committee is currently operating under its Mission Statement “To strategically promote and protect Rotary’s public image by crafting clear and consistent communications that reflect our values, celebrate our impact, and foster lasting relationships with our stakeholders and the broader community.” The mission statement will be achieved by ensuring the club adheres to the following principles;
